The Social Weekend Club

The Social Weekend Club is an online platform where small social challenges are posted as a monthly open-call to designers from all fields to participate in design sprints for social good. On the first week of every month there will be new local social problems posted, and also open team slots for designers to join. The types of designers who joined will be made visible to the public to encourage a collaborative mix of different designers in a team.

Once all the teams are formed, a weekly checklist will be given to each team to keep them in check of the progress and to stay committed. By the end of the last week, each team will send in the final submission to be rated by the public. The one that gets the most promising rating will be commissioned and be implemented for real cases.

Process

In this particular project, the problem area focussed on the low participation of designers in social projects. After conducting few short interviews among designers, the gathered data is used with the behavioural design toolkit. It helped to come to a behavioural hypotheses for such problem could be due to the benefits to look for such projects are not clear. Some cognitive biases were also recognised while using the behavioural design frameworks. The hassle factor and availability biases seem to be the main reasons that is hindering designers from participating in social related projects.

Based on the insights gathered, the best intervention moment is when designers are looking around for potential work or looking out for other designers' work as inspiration. The call to action posts would be posted in designers portfolio/networking website to pique their interest. Once the designer reaches the landing page, the website is designed around the behavioural design strategy that tackles the cognitive biases that designers normally have when it comes to joining social related projects.
