Sound as a creative storytelling tool
Sound as a creative storytelling tool – a crash course in sound design and editing
Description:
You get many sonic impressions from the atmosphere you are in, and you are used to decode the sounds without thinking, because you constantly are in an environment where you are not able to see a very great percentage of the sources from which the sounds you hear originates.
When browsing around the internet, watching ‘design videos’, one find that there are many great ideas presented in a way where one might loose interest, among other reasons because people who record the voiceover doesn’t think about the ‘sonic impact’ of the sound of a laptop fan appearing every time the voiceover is there.
Another example is the sounds of people in the background, because the kitchen window was open at the time of recording. The environment, natural or surreal really matters.
When working with e.g. video (in this case a presentation video of a design), the idea of working with the sounds of the room the object in focus is placed in, is really interesting. You can do a lot when manipulating the room, changing the realistic room to a surreal room for instance. Not describing a park as dogs barking, but describing it with the sounds of the emotional room the character or object is placed in.
This course requires no prior experience with sound, and we will cover both techniques and aesthetics of sound design and editing.
Objectives
You will improve your way of listening to sound, being aware of your environment where you record, and how to improve your end result, even if you recorded with less-expensive equipment, and under bad circumstances.
You will get an introduction to aesthetics to sound, being aware that it’s not necessarily the real sound that is the right sound.
